Project: “Changing the Subject: Feminist Politics in Liberalised India”

Srila Roy is an expert in the field of transnational gender and sexuality studies. Her research, which centers on the Global South in feminist enquiry, has advanced debates on postcolonial gender and sexualities, development, neoliberalism and social movements. During her time at Bellagio in April 2022, she worked on a book manuscript on the changing terrain of feminist politics in India and the impact of a more liberalized Indian economy on feminist and queer organizing. This book is now published with Duke University Press, as Changing the Subject: Feminist and Queer Politics in Neoliberal India. Roy is a Professor of Sociology at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, and the recipient of the inaugural FTGS Global South Feminist Scholar Award from the International Studies Association (ISA).
