Project: “Lessons from the Front Lines of the Battle Against Climate Change”


Mary Nichols is an environmental lawyer and policy practitioner specializing in air pollution, environmental justice, energy policy, and climate change. She has more than 50 years of experience and accomplishments in government, nonprofit, and public service, including serving as head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Air and Radiation and head of the California Air Resources Board. Mary visited Bellagio in March 2023 to write a handbook aimed at Gen Z readers on how to effect the long-term social transformations needed to address climate change. She is currently a professor at the UCLA School of Law and a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at Columbia Center on Global Energy Policy.
