Bellagio Residency: April 2022

Project: “Intersectionality: A Memoir”

Kimberlé W. Crenshaw, the pioneering civil rights scholar, came to Bellagio in April of 2022 to work on her book,  Intersectionality: A Memoir, which tells the backstory of social justice upheavals in the mid-20th century from which the idea of intersectionality first sprang to life. Crenshaw’s work has been foundational in critical race theory and in intersectionality, both terms she coined. Crenshaw is co-founder and executive director of AAPF and faculty director of the Center for Intersectionality and Social Policy Studies (CISPS). She is also the Isidor and Seville Sulzbacher Professor of Law at Columbia Law School and the Promise Institute Chair on Human Rights at UCLA Law School.
