Project: “40,000 Missing Girls: Moral Panics, Global Sporting Events, and the Spectacle of Sex Trafficking”


Dr. Mitchell is a former senior visiting ACLS Fellow at Princeton University, a recipient of awards from the National Science Foundation, Ford Foundation, and multiple times from the American Anthropological Association. He is the author of “Panics without Borders: How Global Sporting Events Drive Myths about Sex Trafficking” (U California 2022) and “Tourist Attractions: Performing Race and Masculinity in Brazil’s Sexual Economy.” He is an international expert on public policy related to sex work and, specifically, how anti-sex trafficking policies often go astray due to lack of cultural competence in the NGO sector.
