“Deepening How We Love”: The Power in Empowering Youth

Lack of diverse representation on and off screen remains one of Hollywood’s greatest challenges despite increased rhetoric from several stars in recent months. Through The Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation (WJSFF), award-winning actress, producer and advocate Jada Pinkett Smith is playing a pivotal role in providing greater access, opportunity and inclusion for underrepresented communities and young people in the entertainment industry and beyond.

On September 19th, Jada joined Rockefeller Foundation President Judith Rodin for the third edition of Insight Dialogues, touching on the many roles she balances including her remarkable career in Hollywood, her vocal advocacy for girls and women worldwide and her work in youth empowerment and employment.

Diversity Begins with Recruitment

“Simply stepping outside of my comfort zone and into a world I had been told was not for me… it was one of the most beautiful experiences I’ve ever had.”

During the conversation, Jada Pinkett Smith revealed the launch of Careers in Entertainment, a new initiative through The Will & Jada Smith Family Foundation that engages young people who are interested in careers and entrepreneurial opportunities within the entertainment industry. The initiative was launched in partnership with The Rockefeller Foundation and in response to President Obama’s call to action through the My Brother’s Keeper Initiative—aimed at increasing opportunities for all of America’s underserved youth.

Combating Trafficking in America

Jada Pinkett Smith went on to talk about the issue of human trafficking, terming it “an epidemic that affects every single woman.” Combating the epidemic is everyone’s responsibility, she said, and offered a solution: to become more educated about the issue and deepen how we love.

“[Trafficking] is an epidemic that affects every single woman… one of the things that we can do in regards to combating trafficking is deepening how we love.” – Jada Pinkett Smith
