“Left to its own devices, the path we’re on — for both the Covid-19 public health response and the overall economic recovery from Covid-19 — is going to lead to the types of inequities and inequalities that will be absolutely devastating for our societies 10 or 15 years from now,” Shah told Global Pulse.
That is why the foundation announced last week a $1 billion, three-year initiative. Some funding will go toward accelerating access to reliable renewable energy across Africa, Asia and Latin America, with a goal of aiding economic recovery. The rest will improve access to health care — including Covid testing — in the United States and other places that have struggled to contain the virus.
