Hiroyuki Doi, 2007

Hiroyuki Doi is a self-taught artist who was born and still lives in Japan. He began drawing in the 1980’s after the death of his younger brother, finding a form of therapy and escape in art. He renders his compositions with a Pilot drawing pen, creating precise markings on washi paper that evoke forms of all scales, from molecular organisms to the cosmos. One of his largest drawings, Hope for the Earth, was created to commemorate those who died in the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. His meticulous works are made of tiny circles that grow organically to become complex compositions, embodying a spiritual preoccupation with the relationship between the smallest part and the whole; from cellular biology to the cosmos.
