When Representative Nita Lowey bid farewell to Congress after 32 extraordinary years, she summarized the philosophy that guided her career: “When you see a problem, do something about it.” That was the spirit of determined optimism that she brought to her decades-long fight for a safer, healthier, and fairer America. On behalf of The Rockefeller Foundation and my family, I extend my deepest condolences to Representative Lowey’s family, friends, and colleagues.
Throughout her career, Representative Lowey fought for those so often left behind. Her support for women’s health, disease research and programs to help low-income and homeless Americans was unwavering. She also worked to project American values to the farthest corners of the globe — and thanks to her efforts, millions of girls received an education and brought hope to their families and communities.
Beyond all of that, Representative Lowey was generous with her time, advice, kindness and humor. We will miss her greatly.
