Project Selection Criteria
A Big Bet is a bold, concerted effort to fundamentally solve a problem, not just make incremental improvements.
Projects may take many forms — from social innovations and policy experiments to community-based initiatives or technology-driven solutions — but all should clearly demonstrate the potential to:
- Foster greater regional and international collaboration by developing new models of cooperation among African nations, regional bodies, and global partners to strengthen Africa’s collective leadership in shaping the future of multilateral systems for the benefit of African communities OR
- Accelerate decentralized renewable energy deployment across underserved communities, leveraging Africa’s vast solar and wind resources to close the energy poverty gap and power green industrialization OR
- Advance public health and heat resilience by strengthening health systems to better prevent, predict, detect, and respond to disease outbreaks and extreme heat impacts driven by climate change, ensuring vulnerable populations can lead healthier lives OR
- Transform food systems to enhance food security, including by providing nutritious school meals or supporting smallholder farmers OR
- Strengthen markets and trade systems that enhance regional economic integration and economic development for excluded participants, OR
- Create enabling conditions for the impact described in any of the priority areas above, with a strong emphasis on artificial intelligence, policy innovation and data access to support African-led solutions for local underserved communities.
