Ahmed Ali Akbar talks with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy about using film to tackle violence against women in Pakistan.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy won Pakistan’s first Oscar for her 2012 documentary Saving Face, which tells the story of survivors of acid violence. She is the only Pakistani to have won two Academy Awards, is the recipient of six Emmy Awards, and was honored by the Government of Pakistan with the Hilal-i-Imtiaz, the second highest civilian honor. Her Oscar-winning film, “A Girls in the River – The Price of Forgiveness” influenced the change of Pakistani law on honor killings. She is the President of The Citizens Archive of Pakistan, a non-profit organization dedicated to cultural and historic preservation through educating their community, fostering an awareness of Pakistan’s history, and instilling pride in Pakistani citizens about their heritage.
