As Chief Data Scientist, Tariq led the Foundation’s work on using data science to improve people’s lives. This included integrating data and technology into the Foundation’s initiative areas of Food, Power, Health, and Jobs; and identifying, shaping and scaling breakthrough data science solutions for the public and social sectors at large.
A mathematician and computer scientist by training, and a pragmatic optimist by nature, he’s spent over a decade working in both start-ups and large organizations using technology, data, and partnerships to solve development problems globally.
Prior to joining the Foundation, Tariq was a Senior Data Scientist and the Global Data Editor of the World Bank. There, he led the Bank’s Open Data Initiative, established a multi-million dollar Data Innovation Fund, and became one of the institution’s most widely read authors using data visualization to communicate about global development to a broad audience.
Tariq is a graduate of the University of Cambridge and lives with his wife, daughter, and beagle in New York.
