Sissel Waage

Director, Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, San Francisco

With more than 20 years of experience working on sustainability issues in North America, Europe, and Africa, Sissel advises companies and leads BSR’s Ecosystem Services Working Group.

Before joining BSR, she worked for Forest Trends in various leadership positions, including as Director of the International Katoomba Group. Prior to this work, Sissel launched and led the R&D Program at The Natural Step (TNS), an international advisory services and research organization focused on sustainable business. She also served as core staff in TNS’ Advisory Services practice, advising Fortune 100 companies on integration of sustainability into strategy, operations, reporting, and philanthropy. Earlier in her career, Sissel worked with Sustainable Northwest and the World Wildlife Fund’s East and Southern Africa Program.

Sissel has a Ph.D. in Environmental Science, Policy and Management from the University of California, Berkeley; an M.S. in Forestry from the University of California, Berkeley; and a B.A. in Political Science from Amherst College. In addition, Sissel has studied at the University of Oslo’s Institute of Human Rights as a Fulbright Scholar.
