Project: “Banality of Scale: When Big Tech, Computer Science, and Human Rights Collide (working title of a current book-in-progress that is the basis of a series of trainings for technologists interested in responsible computing)”


Mary L. Gray is a leading expert in the emerging field of AI and ethics. Gray came to Bellagio in September 2022 to complete a chapter of her latest book, making a case for community-driven innovation through the example of Project Resolve – a research collaboration that she is facilitating between Microsoft and a coalition of community-based organizations in North Carolina fighting COVID-19. In 2020, Gray was named a MacArthur Fellow for her contributions to anthropology and the study of technology and digital economies. She is Senior Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research and Faculty Associate at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society.
