Of all the things a Benefit Corporation represents, “business as usual” is certainly not one of them. Now, thanks to the tireless work of one of our grantees, B Lab, the number of Benefit Corporations in the U.S. is on the rise. In seven states, most recently California and New York, B Lab has played a pivotal role in ushering the passage of groundbreaking legislation that has given birth to this new class of corporation. Benefit Corporations are required to create a material positive impact on society and the environment and to meet higher standards of accountability and transparency. The spread of Benefit Corporation legislation is finally establishing a legal framework that can accommodate for-profit entities whose social benefit purpose is central to their existence.
